Our adventures in the historical triangle of Virginia were not only for looking, seeing, and learning but, of course, tasting. Which most of us thought was the most essential part. Well, mainly I did, especially around mealtime! Usually, I had a nip or two of the brown stuff before dinner and then proceeded to a reservation restaurant of choice. On our first night, we went to the KAT. It was a pre-Revolutionary War reproduction establishment that still served some of the dishes of the 18th century as well as the 21st. The gentlemen in our party opted for the traditional “Hunters Game Pye” with a salad appetizer. This 18th-century dish was like a chicken pie but contained venison, rabbit, and duck. All intermixed with mushrooms, onions, and a tad of bacon stewed in port wine and surrounded by crust. I paired it with an excellent local brown ale called Old Stitch to stay in the early American mode. All were magnificent! I believe the ladies found their choices also delectable, but of course, they did not contain the “Bambi” ingredient. It was a tremendous experience of Colonial eating, and I would heartily recommend it to all!
