Was heading to Pawley’s with BBQ on the brain, or was that the stomach? Anyway, this time around, I was going to make it to Schoolhouse Barbecue, hell or high water. For some reason, I have entirely bypassed this notable establishment over the last twenty years of making this beach rendezvous. No doubt it was the past late journey going down from work and returning on Sundays. However, it was different now since I could depart at a more suitable time. However, I didn’t leave early enough, and woe was me, as I discovered that this rambling ole Schoolhouse of a Qhouse was more of a buffet than counter-ordering. We had reservations at a mighty fine seafood establishment in a few wee hours, so we opted for a few Q sandwiches and tea. They were delightful and were of moist vinegar-based pulled pork topped with white slaw. It was also somewhat peppery as some of the Q places are inclined to do down this direction. This was a little too much spice for Annebelle’s palate, so I scoffed them both down and was happy as a clam. All I can say is that I wish I had more time because I could have put a hurting on that buffet. So go for it while you can because places like these will not be around forever. Also, bring cash cause this place don’t take credit!
