After spending four hours on a bike at the Shiloh Battlefield site in 95-degree weather, I had finally succumbed to exhaustion and needed replenishment fast. Luckily, I had done my homework and figured out the best and nearest site was the Catfish Hotel that was steeped in its own history. How could I pass this up! Well, one thing we know is I am not a seafood lover, especially catfish or any other type for that matter. Nevertheless, I made the short 10-minute journey in record time. Luckily, they were still open, and better yet, I did not have to stand in line since I needed to get out of the crushing heat fast. Unlike the rest of the late-eating patrons, I forgo eating catfish and opted for the Clam Strips, puppies, and slaw. Now, the clam strips were solid, but the standout items were puppies and slaw. The puppies were fried to perfection with a hint of onion that was quite nice. Now, the slaw was interesting as well as delicious. It was like mixing your own with their own special sauce. Nothing I have experienced has been quite like it. And let us not forget the gallon of half and half I gulped down to get hydrated again. So, quite a lunch feast to say the least, but if I were you, I would head to the catfish since I was the only one eating the strips!
Now the Shiloh battlefield site was an experience of a lifetime. Due to the heat, I had the run, or should I say bike, of the place pretty much. Very quiet, restful, and sad all in one setting. Much soul searching. God bless both our grey and blue fallen soldiers!
