I found a new place this past week.  A lawyer friend took me to lunch at Finch’s Family Restaurant/Drive In, 401 Peace Street, Raleigh NC.  This is on Peace just under the freeway going into downtown from the north, just east of the intersection of Glenwood and Peace.   Finch’s used to be a drive in, but now you just park your car in the drive-in slot and go inside to eat.  It has two separate dining rooms, and Legislators apparently like to meet there for a meal in the back room when in session.  Finch’s reportedly serves a great home cooked country style breakfast, and at lunch the menu included several meat and two side dish items on the menu, along with various sandwiches.   I opted for a burger with chili, slaw and mustard, and it was very good.   The patty was cooked just right, cooked done all the way through but still juicy, with a bit of char from the grill.  I had onion rings on the side, and they were tasty but a bit on the greasy side.  I prefer mine crisp and well-drained.  My friend got the hamburger steak with sauteed onions and two veggie sides.  Our other lunch companion opted for the chili dog and fries, and his fries were crisp and tasty.  The iced tea was very good.  Service was fast and friendly even at 1 pm on a weekday.  Finch’s is just a down-home place that has been there for decades, and it serves good, solid, unpretentious food within easy reach of downtown.  I will go back there for breakfast when I get a chance.
